How to charge your Audi e-Tron
Rethink how you charge your Audi e-Tron. Choose where and when you want to ‘refill’. By introducing its e-Tron 55 quattro technologies, Audi introduces the world to the premier truly capable, premium battery-powered vehicle. If you are thinking about purchasing an Audi plug-in vehicle, or you already own one but you are looking for more information on how it works, then you have come to the right place. At Pfaff Audi, we have a large selection of new and pre-owned Audi plug-in vehicles that are waiting for you to take out for a test drive. However, in this blog, we won’t be talking about the features of these vehicles, but instead, we will be sharing some information about how to charge your Audi e-Tron vehicle.
Multiple levels of charging with the Audi e-Tron
In terms of EV chargers, level 1 is the most commonly available charge using a standard wall plug, it is the same plug your toaster uses, and also the slowest. While this appears to be an issue, it offers the perfect solution for regular top-ups. Given that most commutes are between 50 to 100 km per day, the e-Tron 55 quattro’s impressive range means there is still plenty of power left in the battery. Plugging the car in overnight allows plenty of time for the battery to recharge.
Level 2 supplies 240 V, similar to what a dryer or oven uses and is also widely available. To optimize the flow of electricity to the car, it is recommended to install a level-2 charger at home. Should you choose to use the level-2 charger, you will require a NEMA 14-50 plug receptacle to be installed by a certified electrician at your place of residence or wherever you plan to charge. It is the easiest and fastest way to charge your EV at home.
Level 3 charging is the fastest charging available for any EV. Due to the extremely high voltage and amp service required for level 3, it isn’t possible to install one in a domestic residence. Like level 2, there are more and more level-3 chargers coming online every day. It is possible to charge a battery from 0 to 80% in less than 30 minutes¹ using a 150 kW DCFC level-3 station. Electrify Canada will be building a network of these high speed 150 kW stations which will open in Canada in 2019.
The Audi e-Tron 55 quattro will come equipped with the necessary charging capsule equipment to charge your e-Tron in the comforts of your home. The e-Tron will include the Audi Charging System Compact, a wall unit that connects the vehicle to the electric power source.
Helping you conquer the land of quattro, a new network of charging stations is being set up across the nation. Electrify Canada will create a convenient and reliable DC fast charging network in metropolitan areas, as well as along busy highways. Charging time for the Audi e-Tron will be approximately 30 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger capable of 150kW.
Some keywords for EV life
Charging power is measured using kilowatts (kW), generally the higher the number the faster the charging will be. The vehicle’s onboard charger will dictate how many kilowatts can be used for charging.
Kilowatt Hours (kWh):
Battery capacity is like a conventional gas tank but is measured in kWh or kilowatt-hours versus litres.
Charging times are generally referring to a full charge. The level of charging will be based on the maximum power output of the charging site, battery temperature and state of charge required for the battery.
